Aahat - Red Jasper Brass Earrings

From the Ankahee collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Aahat takes its name from the Urdu word for the faint sound of someone approaching and captures the quiet sign of a presence felt before it is seen. Each earring is a brass hoop shaped like a wide crescent, filled with a lattice of angular lines, with one round red jasper cabochon set in a bezel at the center of the base.

The stone is natural red jasper from Balochistan, Pakistan. Jasper is opaque microcrystalline quartz, and its red comes from fine grains of iron oxide, hematite, spread through the stone. Because the color sits inside the quartz rather than on the surface, it stays even across the polish. Cut as a smooth cabochon, it reads as a deep brick red against the warm gold of the brass, and at about 7 on the Mohs scale it is hard enough for daily wear.

The angular lattice recalls the geometric patterning of Islamic tilework. The band is widest at the base, where the stone sits, and the open pattern keeps the pair light on the ear. At 1.6 Inches, the pattern reads clearly and the single red stone becomes the point the eye rests on.
