Guftagu - Red Jasper Brass Ring

From the Ankahee collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Guftagu takes its name from the Urdu word for conversation and reflects the exchanges that unfold without words. The face of the ring is a brass rosette of radiating triangles and angular cutouts, with one round red jasper cabochon set at its center in a twisted rope bezel.

The stone is natural red jasper from Balochistan, Pakistan. Red jasper forms when silica rich sediment is cemented into fine grained quartz, and iron oxide, hematite, dispersed through it gives the red: the more iron, the deeper the color. Egyptian craftsmen carved red jasper into amulets, and it has been prized for its color ever since. Set as a small domed cabochon, it reads as a deep brick red at the heart of the pierced brass.

The rosette spreads across the finger as a wide, pierced face, so the ring reads as pattern first and stone second. The band underneath is open and adjustable, so one ring fits a range of finger sizes, and the open lattice keeps a ring of this size light.

Made at Orah Jewels and Crafts in Lahore, with jasper sourced directly from Balochistan over twelve years and brasswork finished by hand. One piece.
