Tasavvur - Lapis Lazuli Brass Earrings

From the Ankahee collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Tasavvur takes its name from the Urdu word for imagination and gives shape to thoughts that exist before they are spoken. Each earring is a brass hoop shaped as a broad crescent, pierced with circles and crossed lines, with one round lapis lazuli cabochon set where the two ends of the band meet.

The stone is natural lapis lazuli from Badakhshan, Afghanistan, mined in the Kokcha Valley for over six thousand years. Lapis is a rock built mainly from lazurite, which gives the deep blue, with white calcite veining and gold flecks of pyrite, the natural variation of genuine lapis. It was traded to Egypt and Mesopotamia and ground into ultramarine pigment for centuries. Here it is a small cabochon, cut and polished in Lahore, so the blue reads as one clean field against the brass.

The pierced pattern recalls the jali screens of Mughal architecture. The band is widest at the base and narrows toward the closure, and the openwork keeps the pair light on the ear. At 2 Inches, the hoops show the pattern clearly and sit easily with both plain and printed clothing.

Made at Orah Jewels and Crafts in Lahore, with lapis sourced directly from Badakhshan over twelve years and brasswork finished by hand. One pair.
