Surkh Naqsh - Red Jasper Brass Ring

From the Hala collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Surkh Naqsh takes its name from Sindhi: surkh meaning red, naqsh meaning pattern or motif. The ring face carries swirling filigree that echoes the geometric tilework of Hala's shrines, pressed into warm brass that frames the central stone with precision and deliberate weight. Each carved detail in the metalwork mirrors the ornamental vocabulary of Sindh, a tradition of surface decoration that makes even a small object feel architectural.

The stone is natural Red Jasper, sourced from Balochistan, Pakistan's western highland province. Jasper is a microcrystalline variety of quartz, its red tones produced by dispersed iron oxide throughout the matrix, the same chemistry that colors the soil across Balochistan's landscape. Unlike translucent gemstones, jasper is fully opaque and dense, taking a smooth polish that presents its earthy crimson cleanly and without distraction. The stone has been worked by jewelers across the Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, and ancient Egypt, prized for its durability and its warm, grounding presence. In Surkh Naqsh, the natural surface of the jasper holds the eye without competing with the filigree surrounding it.

The ring is cast in brass, called peetal in Sindhi and Punjabi craft traditions, a metal that has been central to subcontinental ornamental work for centuries. Brass carries a warmth that silver does not, and its slightly heavier visual presence makes the filigree patterns read with more authority on the hand. The band is adjustable, fitting a range of sizes without compromising the proportions of the face. The stone sits flush within the setting so the entire face reads as one coherent surface.
