Mother of pearl from Gwadar, the port city on Pakistan's Makran Coast, carries a quality of iridescence shaped by the particular mineral composition of the Arabian Sea's warm waters. It is nacre: the same material that lines the interior of mollusks and, under the right conditions, produces pearls. In its sheet form, it presents a shifting surface of color, white, cream, soft pink, and silver — that moves with light rather than reflecting it.
