Sargoshi - Lapis Lazuli Brass Earrings

From the Ankahee collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Sargoshi takes its name from the Urdu word for a whisper and is inspired by feelings shared softly and understood without explanation. Each earring is a brass hoop shaped like a pointed shield, its body cut into scrolling arabesque openwork inside a twisted rope border, with one almond shaped lapis lazuli cabochon set at the base.

The stone is natural lapis lazuli from Badakhshan, Afghanistan. Lapis is a rock, not a single mineral: lazurite gives the blue, calcite the white veining and pyrite the gold flecks. The name lazuli traces back to the Persian lajvard, linked to the Badakhshan mines, and the same stone was ground into ultramarine pigment for centuries. Kept small here, the cabochon reads as one point of deep blue at the center of the brasswork.

The scrolling openwork recalls the arabesque ornament of Persian and Mughal manuscripts and metalwork. The point of the shield sits low, where the stone is, and a hinged wire closes into the opposite end. At 1.5 Inches, the pair stays light on the ear.
