The Qalam bookmark by Orah Jewels is handcrafted in brass with Islamic calligraphy and geometric patterns, inlaid with natural nephrite jade sourced from Bajur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The word qalam means pen in Arabic and Urdu - the instrument of knowledge, here made into a marker for the written page.
Nephrite from Bajur is one of Pakistan's less publicized gemstones - dense, fibrous, and suited to detail work at small scale. The stone takes a smooth surface without losing its characteristic olive-green translucence, visible along the bookmark's inlaid edge.
