Mehndi - Green Tourmaline Silver Ring

From the Sunheri Shaam collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Mehndi takes its name from the henna applied at celebrations across South Asia, and carries a color to match: a natural green tourmaline from Afghanistan, set on a sleek, straight lined silver band.

Tourmaline is a boron silicate mineral capable of more color variation than almost any other gemstone family, and the green variety, known in the trade as verdelite, gets its color from trace iron and chromium within the crystal structure. Afghanistan's pegmatite fields, particularly around Nuristan and Kunar province, are known for tourmaline with sharp, well saturated color that holds steady rather than fading toward grey under artificial light, a trait gemologists call color stability.

The straight line band in Mehndi is a departure from more ornamented settings elsewhere in the collection, a modern, architectural form that leaves the tourmaline's color to carry the entire piece. Understated, current, and built around a single strong material decision.
