Saaya - Opal Silver Ring
From the Sunheri Shaam collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Saaya means shadow in Urdu, a title that plays against the ring it names: a natural Australian opal set into a broad silver band, its surface never still, color shifting with every movement of the hand.
Opal forms when silica rich water seeps into rock cavities and deposits microscopic spheres of silica gel over thousands of years. When those spheres are uniform in size, they diffract light into the spectrum of color known as play of color, the effect that makes opal unlike any other gemstone in how it behaves under light. Australia produces the overwhelming majority of the world's precious opal, and the stone in Saaya was chosen for the range of color visible across its surface rather than a single dominant tone.
The band in Saaya is intentionally broad, giving the opal a wide setting to sit within so the play of color has room to move as the hand turns, rather than being compressed into a narrow bezel.
