Watermelon Tourmaline and Topaz Silver Earrings
From the Sunheri Shaam collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, these earrings set natural watermelon tourmaline alongside white topaz in sterling silver with a 24k gold plate finish. Watermelon tourmaline is one of the more visually distinct stones in the gemstone world: a single crystal that carries two colors simultaneously, its pink interior transitioning to green at the outer zone, the cross section resembling the flesh and rind of a watermelon. The pairing with white topaz and gold plate produces a composition that is warm, layered, and unusual in equal measure.
Tourmaline grows as a trigonal crystal in pegmatite rock formations, and its color is determined by trace elements absorbed during crystal growth. In watermelon tourmaline, the shift from pink to green within one crystal occurs when the chemical environment of the host rock changes during the growth period, producing a color zoning that runs parallel to the crystal axis. The pink center is colored by manganese, the green outer zone by iron: both elements present in the same crystal at different stages of formation. Watermelon tourmaline specimens of sufficient quality to cut and set are rare relative to single color tourmaline, which accounts for their significance as collector and heirloom pieces. The white topaz accent stones are sourced from Skardu Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, where high altitude pegmatite deposits produce topaz with strong clarity and a high refractive index that creates clean light return around the central tourmaline.
The earrings are set in sterling silver with a 24k gold plate that bridges the warmth of the pink tourmaline zone and the cool clarity of the topaz. Each stone is individually set in a prong configuration that holds the gem securely while keeping the face open to light. At 0.8 inches, the earrings sit at the lobe with minimal drop, presenting both stones directly without length or movement. The scale is suited to daily wear and reads as precise rather than understated.
Made at the Orah Jewels and Crafts facility in Lahore. Orah Jewels sources its watermelon tourmaline through a direct gemstone supply network and its topaz from Skardu Valley, selecting stones by color zoning clarity and crystal quality before cutting and setting in Lahore. One pair.
