Meena Baagh - Brown Onyx and Lapis Lazuli Brass Earrings
From the Gulzar collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, Meena Baagh, which translates to "blue garden" in Urdu, brings together Brown Onyx and Lapis Lazuli in a single brass earring that holds the contrast of earth and sky. The warm, banded brown of the onyx sits alongside the dense ultramarine of the lapis, a pairing that reads as elemental. At 2.2 inches, this is one of the longer drop pieces in the collection.
Brown Onyx is sourced from Baluchistan, a province with extensive sedimentary mineral deposits. Onyx belongs to the chalcedony family, a cryptocrystalline form of quartz, and its banding develops through the slow, layered deposition of silica-rich fluids in sedimentary rock over geological timescales. The brown tones are produced by iron oxide compounds drawn into the chalcedony lattice during formation, creating the warm, grounded coloring that gives the stone its characteristic earthiness. The surface of brown onyx has a matte to waxy finish that sits differently from glassier stones: quieter, more grounded. The Lapis Lazuli comes from Badakhshan, Afghanistan, where it has been mined since the Neolithic period. Its ultramarine color is produced by lazurite, with the characteristic pyrite flecks that vary between stones. In Meena Baagh, the two stones are placed so their contrast is the point: warmth against depth, matte against density, earth against sky.
Meena Baagh measures 2.2 inches, making it one of the more presence-oriented earrings in the Gulzar collection. The aged brass construction ties the brown of the onyx and the blue of the lapis into a coherent palette without forcing them together. The earring drops enough to frame the face, and the stone contrast carries the visual work without requiring size. This pair reads well against both neutral and warm toned clothing and works alone or with additional pieces.
Made at the Orah Jewels and Crafts facility in Lahore, Meena Baagh is assembled by hand by Orah's artisans. Orah sources Brown Onyx from Baluchistan and maintains a long-term supply relationship with Badakhshan for its lapis, both within the regional gemstone network built over more than twelve years. One pair.
