Sang - Natural Lapis Lazuli Silver Ring
From the Rani collection by Orah Jewels and Crafts, a ring where the design language is architectural rather than organic. Sang presents a geometric silver form inlaid with Lapis Lazuli from Badakhshan, Afghanistan, the stone cut flat and set flush within the frame so the surface of the lapis and the surface of the silver lie in the same plane, neither raised above the other.
Lapis Lazuli from Badakhshan has been the world's most significant source of this stone for over six millennia. The lazurite mineral within the calcium carbonate matrix produces a blue of unusual depth and opacity that no other natural material replicates, making it the stone of choice for inlay work across every major ancient civilization in its trade radius. When used in a geometric inlay setting as in Sang, the flat face of the stone reads as a color field rather than a textured object, the blue becoming an even, uninterrupted plane within the silver frame. Any pyrite inclusions within the cut piece appear as fine gold details within that blue field, not as surface irregularities but as part of the color composition itself. The stone was cut and shaped at the Orah Jewels lapidary in Lahore, where the flat face was calibrated to sit precisely within the silver setting without gaps or height differential.
The geometric setting is cast in silver and polished smooth, the inlaid stone occupying the central face of the design. The ring is adjustable around US size 7.5, the band open at the back to allow for minor size variation. The design works from a top-down reading angle, the flat face of the stone and frame visible without requiring the piece to be lifted or tilted.
