Sabz - Natural Green Serpentine Décor

Rs.10,500

A handcrafted table décor piece by Orah Jewels and Crafts, named Sabz, Urdu for green. At its center sits a hand cut steel medallion, a dense arabesque scrollwork rosette built from interlocking curling vines, a pattern drawn from the same ornamental tradition as the carved screens and grillwork found across Mughal era architecture.

The stone is natural green serpentine, sourced from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, quarried from the province's serpentine belt. Serpentine forms when ultramafic rock such as peridotite is altered by hydrothermal fluids, converting magnesium rich silicate minerals into the soft, waxy textured serpentine group minerals antigorite and lizardite. The mottled green and black pattern on this piece comes from chromite and magnetite inclusions scattered through the serpentine matrix, while the fine web like veining is left by later mineral filled fractures. Serpentine has long been carved across the region for seals and small vessels, sometimes mistaken for jade because of its similar density and waxy luster, though it is a distinct mineral group. This piece's speckled, marbled surface is unusually dense, which is why it was left in its natural rounded form rather than cut into a flat tile.

At 4 x 4 inches, Sabz sits comfortably on a desk, console, or prayer corner. Made at the Orah Jewels and Crafts facility in Lahore, where the medallion is cut and set into the stone by hand. One piece.
